Compensation is a joke

So, I'm going to be blunt here. If you're relying on notifications to keep you safe you are not going to be successful. Push notifications are subject to a lot of different variables getting from the application to your eyeballs. There is the path from the application to the notification gateway, which I assume is Amazon SNS since they're on AWS, then from the gateway to the provider, either Google Cloud Notifications (GCN) or Apple Push Notification Service (APNS), then either (moderately) directly to your phone if you're on wi-fi or through your network provider if you're on a cellular connection. Of course then it has to be picked up by the system service, routed to the correct push notification provider, potentially deal with any idiosyncratic 3rd party applications that may want to change something and finally get shown to you. Anything from issues on the WBI/Turbine side to transient network issues to your phone having issues can cause this to fail. Hell, towards the end of my previous phone's lifespan I stopped getting SMS or voice mail notifications. You know, a kind of core piece of phone functionality that has many fewer moving parts.

Also, even if you were to get the alert and be in a position to respond immediately it's still probably too late. With practice you can get rally marches off every 10 seconds, maybe less. I tested a while back being at the lock screen and getting into the game and putting on a shield and it took me close to 30 seconds, if the game was unloaded from memory it took closer to a minute. So that's at least 3 rallies hitting per group. Against a 16M power player we'll probably start with taking a few hundred thousand power per hit, wounding 35-40k troops. This accelerates, of course, and after 8 or so you're looking at maybe a million power per hit. You got hit 36 times. I've seen that happen in less than 1 minute.

I don't mean to suggest that they shouldn't work. After all, having a feature that works only part of the time is, in a lot of ways, worse than not having that feature at all. But given the inherent issues with network communication and a whole lot of hardware between WBI/Turbine and your phone as well as the timing problems above relying on them as the sole means of ensuring you don't lose your troops or resources is unwise.

As far as the compensation amount if you're looking for someone to blame, blame us, the players. For a while they were compensating people significantly for, among other things, not receiving notifications. And you know what happened? People abused it. And that's why we can't have nice things.

I will take the opportunity to talk about a major problem with this game, the costs associated with losing an attack on your keep. I recently did the math and the gold costs to replace 6M power worth of T8 troops approaches 1M, which in a naive accounting is $600 USD. That's 500k or so T8 troops, which even if you have top-of-the-line medic tents you'll be saving 100k of them, assuming you don't have any legacy lower level troops that crowd them out. That's $600 on the line if you happen to misjudge timing, not pay attention and click the wrong button or god forbid go out and do something other than stare at your phone -- you know, be alive. That one fact is at the root of most of the issues with the game and the community.

Kawaru, no I don't use notifications to keep me safe. I am mad because I was scouted three times around 10:30 in the morning without notification, the first attacke wasn't until 1:15 pm, 3 hours later, so yeaah if I would've received the notifications , I wouldn't have lost 14 million power.
